Dear Mr. Burnett:

-).7 y

,.,/

This is to inform you that Exxon :;uclear has completed the 1 reduction efforts discussed in Reference 3.

The current inventory of plutonium is less than 500 grams and is contained in the form of stan-dards and contaminated equipment and materials.

Hence, only material of low strategic significance is now retained at our facility.

Although license SNM-1227 (Reference 1) authorizes possession of up to j

100 kg of plutonium, the quantity of material actually in possession is l

understood to be the basis for determining the level of protection required by 10 CFR 73.

Consequently, reduction of the inventory to less than 500 grams of plutonium is believed to obviate compliance with the Physical j

Protection Plan (XN-183), Safeguards Contingency Plan (XN-h?-488), and l

Security Personnel Training Program (:CI-hT-503). Physical protection of the remaining plutonium inventory will be provided in accordance with the approved Physical Protection Plan for Material of Low Strategic Significance (XN-NF-538).

A minor administrative amendment of XN-NF-538 is needed as a result of the inventory reduction to delete reference to the physical protection plan for strategic special nuclear material. That change will be incor-porated in the normal course of updating the docu=ent.
