Dear Mr. Keppler:

On September 25, 1980, Mr. S. J. Brewer of Public Service Company of Indiana, Inc. (PSI) notified your office of a potentially reportable item as required by 10 CFR 50.55(e). During maintenance of storage conditions on cable tray hangers, deficiencies were identified in a number of their welds. The con-tractor who identified the deficiencies issued a nonconformance report which was submitted to PSI for evaluation and disposition. Subsequent to the pre-liminary telephone notification, additional weld deficiencies were identified which were included within the scope of this concern.

PSI performed an evaluation of those deficiencies which included a reinspec-tion of the cable tray hangers in question. At the time of PSI's interim report of October 24, 1980 it appeared that a small number of these welds would require rework. Since that time, PSI's architect-engineer, Sargent &

Lundy has examined and reevaluated the welds which appeared to require rework and determined that each affected hanger would satisfactorily perform its function and rework would not be required. As a result it can be concluded that had this problem remained uncorrected, this item would not have affected adversely the safety of operations of the plant and therefore is not report- ,

able under 10 CFR 50.55(e). l 1
