Thank you for your letter, DJR ltr. #81-24, dated January 11, 1981, describing the disposition of the alleged loss of 300,000 to 400,000 gallons of low level radioactive water from the Dresden Station during August of 1980.

We have reviewed your January 11 letter and other letters and reports on this subject. Based upon the results of this review and a special inspection conducted by Mr. F. W. Reimann of my staff on January 21, 1981, we have concluded that your correspondence accurately assesses the facts surrounding this matter. Additionally, we determined that your staff adequately fulfilled the short term commitments regarding this matter, as documented in NRC Inspection Report Nos. 50-010/80-15; 50-237/80-18; 50-249/80-22.

We understand that you are continuing to:

(1) perform monthly surveil-lance of locked closed / lead sealed valves which could cause an unmonitored release; (2) sample local wells for a period of at least 1 year; and (3) maintain an inventory of wastewater stored at the Dresden Station to aid in detecting large unplanned releases. We will examine these matters during future inspections.

The disposition and closeout of your commitments will be documented in our next routine Resident Inspector's inspection report. Consequently, no reply to this letter is required unless your understanding of the i

disposition of the above items is different from that stated.
