Docket Nos. STN 50-498, STN 50-499 Third Interim Report Concerning Stud Welds on Concrete Embedments Or, July 31, 1980, pursuant to 10CFR50.55(e), Houston Lignting & Power Company notified your office of an item concerning stud welds on concrete embedments. Interim reports were sent to your office on August 28, 1980 and October 8, 1980. In accordance with our interim report commitment, this letter provides information on the present status of this concern.

Data collection is nearly complete. Thus far, of the 369,025 welds that have been inspected, less than 0.05% of this total have been found to be reject-abl e. A statistical evaluation of this condition is being prepared, however, necessary data for this evaluation, such as specific plate configuration and load application, remains to be analyzed.

Since completion of this item is taking longer than anticipated, the next report on this matter will be submitted by March 6,1981.

If there are any questions, please contact Mr. Michael E. Powell at (713) 676-8592.

Very truly yours,
