Units 1&2 El Docket Nos. STN 50-498, STN 50-499 Interim Report Concerning Cable Tray Hanger Design On December 5,1980, in accordance with 10 CFR 50.55(e), Houston Lighting

& Power Company notified your office of an item concerning cable tray hanger design for the South Texas Project. During a design review it was found that for one type of hanger design, a connection between a hanger beam and vertical leg was based in part on an improper cross reference to a standard design.

This was detected after initial design verification reviews had been completed and hangers had been fabricated and erected.

The following actions are underway. First, each affected location will be subject to a stress analysis and, where reouired, modification will be made to strengthen the connection. Preliminary analysis indicates that although some cornections will require modification to re-estat.lish design margins, none would fail if left uncorrected; i.e., stress would exceed yield allowables but not ultimate allowables. Second, the design process used for all non-standard cable tray hanger designs is being reviewed to determine if there are concerns with other types of completed hanger designs. Third, the design control system for Class IE electrical cable tray hangers is being reviewed to detemine whether there is a need for additional design controls.

The next interim report will be sent to you on March 1,1981.

If there are any questions about this item, please contact Mr. Michael E.

Powell at (713) 676-8592.

Very trul yours,
