VIRGINIA ELECTRIC AND PowEn COMPANY Rrcuxonn,VrmormzA 2026 January 15, 1981 Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Serial No. 999A Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation N0/LEN/jmj Atta:

Mr. Robert A. Clark, Chief Docket No. 50-338 Operating Reactors Branch No. 3 License No. NPF-4 Division of Licensing U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.

Dear Mr. Denton:

AUXILIARY FEEDWATER SYSTEM REQUIRDiENTS NORTH ANNA UNIT 1 On December 26, 1980, Vepco responded to the NRC concerning a discrepancy discovered during the North Anna Unit 1 auxiliary feedwater system review required by Enclosure 2 to the NRC letter to Vepco dated September 28, 1979.

The discrepancy developed in verifying auxiliary feed pump 1-W-P-3B flow through calculations, where it was conservatively estimated that the pump would deliver 335 gpa to the steam generator instead of the design basis of 340 gpm. These calculations were performed as required and originally submitted in a letter dated October 6, 1980.

Our December 26, 1980 letter stated that pump tests had been performed and verified 340 gpm are delivered to the steam generator. This statement was in error in that the pump tests run only verified the pump head curve used in the calculations. A subsequent test was run to measure the pressure drop between the pump and the steam generator. Data from these tests is presently being used to determine if 340 gpm are delivered to the steam generator. Results from the final calculations will be forwarded as -soon as they are available.

Should you have any questions or require additional information, please contact us.

Very truly yours, B. R. Sylvia Manager - Nuclear Operations and Maintenance cc:
