Mr. Karl Coller Assistant Director for Operating Reactors Gentlemen:
Subject:
Effects of Non-CateEory A Ecuipeent Failure Docket No. 50-206
+
Provisional Operating License No. DPR-13 San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1 Your letter of December 13, 1974 reouested us to e
review our 1972 response and the San Onofre Uriit 1 facility i
to determine if failure of any non-seistic Category A*
l equipment could result in a condition that might affect the performance of safety-related equipment required for safe shutdown of the facility, or that is required to limit the l.
consequences of an accident.
We submitted the results of our investigation on March 21, 1975 in the report " Effects of Non-Category A Equipment Failure on Safety-Related Equipment, San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, Unit 1."
In that report it was concluded that safety-related equipeent is adequately arotected against postulated non-Category A equipeent failure.
- lowever, further investigation into the possible effects of hydrazine/
ammonis and potassium chromate chemical solutions upon certain safety-related electrical cables were still required.
1
" category A is defined in Section 9.2 of the San Onofre Unit 1 Final Safety Analysis.

Mr. Karl Coller May 30, 1975 The results of this additional investigation are contained in the enclosed " Effects of Mon-Category A Equiptent Failure on Eafety-F. elated Equiptent, San Onofre Muclear Generating Station, Unit 1 Supplement."
Enclosed are three originals and thirty-seven copies of our submittal.
Our additional investigation shows that possible chemical release from non-Catecory A equipment failure vill not impair the perferrance of fafety-related electrical cables and that no additional protection of the cables is required.
In general, it is cencluded from the referenced report and the enclosed supplerent that plant design and operator action provide adequate protection of safety-related equipment against postulated non-Cate:;ory A equiptent failure.
It is also concluded that no further action is required, very truly yours,
/s/ K. P. Baskin l
