Dear Mr. Engelken:
P
Subject:
Docket Nos. 050-361 and 050-362 l
San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Units 2 and 3 I
Your letter of January 3, 1974 forwarded Regulatory Operations Bulletin 74-1 which requested that we inform you regarding whether l
valves similar to those described in Attachments A and B of the Bulletin will be installed in the San Onofre Units 2 and 3.
It was further re-t l
quested that if such valves were scheduled for installation and con-tained the deficiencies described in the Bulletin attachments, we advise you of our planned corrective action.
The information below is in response to these requests.
At present, no nuclear safety related valves have been pur-chased for San Onofre Units 2 and 3.
Specifications for these valves are either in preparation or have been issued for bidding purposes.
Specifications in preparation will be modified as appropriate to incor-porate the following requirements:
(1) the specifications will require that mounting plates for motor operators be attact.ed to the valves with sufficient strength and rigidity to support the load of the motor operators under all specified design loadings, and (2) the specifica-i I
tions will require that valves be designed to ensure reseating without causing damage to the valve internals.
For valve spectitcations pre-sently issued for bid, each valve design will be reviewed to ensure l
compatibility with the requirements of (1) and (2) above prior to i
placament of the purchase order.
I Based on the preceding and our existing nuclear valve speci-fication requirements for design, fabrication, testing and inspection, it is concluded that valves having the deficiencies described in Bulletin 74-1 will not be installed in San Onofre Units 2 and 3.
