Docket No. 50-133 License No. DPR-7
Dear Mr. Engelken:
In response to your letter dated January 30, 1975, which cnclosed IE Bulletin No. 75-01, Humboldt Bay Unit No. 3 was shut down on February 7, 1975 to permit implementation of the inspection program outlined in our letter dated February 6, 1975.
Your letter dated February 7, 1975 confirmed that you had reviewed our planned program and found it acceptable.
The inspections were completed and the results were reported by telephone to Mr. L. J. Garvin of the Region V office on February 9, 1975.
The inspection included nine welds in the core spray system, two welds in the feedwater system and one weld in the shutdown return system.
Initially, our planned inspection program included eight welds in the core spray system.
However, one additional weld was found to be accessible and was examined.
The ultrasonic examination procedures used were in accordance with the requirements of Appendix I of the 1974 edition of Section XI of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code with regard to instrument and equipment calibration.
Forty-five degree shear wavc examinations were conducted of the welds and of the piping for a distance of 6T i
l (with a minimum of 2 inches and a maximum of 8 inches) on the pipe side of welds.
(T is pipe tiall thickness.)
Longitudinal beam examinations were performed for a distance of 2T on the fitting side of welds and 6T (with a minimum of 2 inches and a maximum of 8 inches) 7/6 N 2*6/70 N

The examination revealed no reportable ultrasonic reflectors.
The unit was returned to service February 11, 1975 follow-ing the inspection.
Very truly yours,
