This repcrt covers the operation of the Yankee Atomic Electric Company at Rowe, Massachusetts for the month of August, 1971.

During the period plant load varied between 175 0 MWe and 179.2 MWe as the circulating water temperature fluctuated between 63 F I

and Sh F.

The sixth, Core IX vapor container air leakege surveillance period continued through the report period with normal leakage noted.

Plant Abnormal Occurrences t

l Abnormal Occurrence No. 71-3 " Waste Gas Leakage".

On August 30, 1971 a review of recent vaste gas surge drum pressure readings indicated the possibility of leakage from the vaste gas system.

Inmediate testing located leakage inside the hydrogen analyzer c abi net. After isolation of the analyzer, extensive testing of the entire vaste gas system showed no significant additional leakage. Upon reestab-lishnent of its integrity the hydrogen analyzer was returned to service.

A total volume of 2700 ft3 of gas was accounted for at a release rate of 0.019 cen. A ceiling exhaust fan with a capacity of 2100 cfm provided a dilution factor of approximately 1.1 x 102 9

The total activity released due to the leakage was 28.680 me.

The concentration of the released gases after dilution was 3.hl x 10-9 ue/cc.

Plant Load Reductions August 3 (1905-2015):

Plant load reduction to 139 MWe due to an electrical storm.

August h (11h5-1222):

Plant load reducticn to 167 MWe for turbine control valve exercising.

August 5 (0300-0602):

Plant load rcduction to 136 MWe at request of REMVEC dispatcher.

August 11 (12k5-1625):

Plant load reduction to 135 MWe due to an electrical storm.

August 12 (1150-1325):

Plant load reduction to 130 MWe for turbine throttle valve exercising.

August 19 (11h5-1220):

Plant load reduction to 169 MWe for control valve exercising.

August 25 (1155-1230):

Plant load reduction to 168 MWe for turbine 9

control va?ve exercising.
