This report covers the operation of the Yankee Atomic Electric Company at Rowe, Massachusetts, for the month of December,1971.

During the period plant load varied between 156.1 MWe and 170 5 6

0 MWe as the circulating water temperature fluctuated between 42 F and 36 F.

The eighth, Core IX vapor container air leakage surveillance period continued through the report period with normal leakage noted.

Plant Abnormal Occurrences There were no plant abnormal occurrences during the report period.

Plant Load Reductions, December 1 (1150-1316):

Plant load reduction to 132 MWe for turbine throttle valve exercising.

Plant Shutdowns There were no plant shutdowns during the report period.

Plant Maintenance The following is a list of pertinent maintenance items performed V

by the plant staff during the month of December,1971:

1.

Three storage rack positions were removed from the new fuel vault to facilitate ease of future fuel handling.

2.

The No. 3 boiler feed pump was repacked and the motor oil seals were replaced.

Instrumentation and Control The following is a list of pertinent instrumentation and control maintenance p.

' armed by the plant staff during the month of December,1971.

1.

The narrow range temperature channels we n recalibrated to a lower range due to plant coastdown.

Reactor Plant Performance-The following parameters were determined by means of incore ins trumentation:

513.0 MWt; 504.8 F Tave; Control Rod Group A, B, C, D 0 90*";

155.5 MWe; 1.18" Hg B.P.; 513.0 MWt; 37.0 F C.W. in; TTD = 27.9 F; cleanliness factor = 76.9%.

Chemis try The main coolant ammonia and boron concentrations averaged 13.3 ppm and 2.6 ppm, respectively.

The main coolant pH averaged 9.62 during the period.

The main coolant beta-gamma specific activity and crud level averaged 8.19 x 10-2 uc/ml and 0.05 ppm, respectively.

[N The main coolant tritium concentration averaged 1.15 uc/ml during

the report period.

I The iodine-131 specific activity averaged 8.14 x 10-5 uc/cc and the iodine 131/133 atomic ratio averaged 1.15.

A crud sample for the month collected on December 15, had the following radiochemical analyses: dpm/mg crud Cr-51 Mn-54 Fe-59 7
