Attention: Mr. D. W. Mazur Program Director, WNP 1/4 Gentlemen:

During a telephone conversation on March 24, 1981 between Mr. J. R. Agee of our Region IV (Dallas) Office and Messrs. J. E. Rhoads and G. C. Sorensen, of Mr. Bouchey's staff, preliminary inquiries were made concerning the Washington Public Power Supply System's (WPPSS) equipment environmental qualification program.

Upon the advice of these identified WPPSS representatives, we are addressing this letter to your office to advise you of our interests in this specific area and to request your cooperation in this matter.

Confinning the essence of the March 24 conversation, representatives from our Headquarters' staff, having inspection responsibilities for equipment qualification, are planning to meet with WPPSS personnel at your Richland office during the week of April 21, 1981 to discuss in greater detail our inspection program and your plans and schedules relative to equipment environ-mental qualification.

Mr. A. B. Bennett, Senior Electrical Engineer, Office of Inspection and Enforcement, Bethesda, Md., will have the lead for the NRC for this meeting.

In addition to discussing your plans and schedules, we wish to examine your environmental qualification test plans and supporting data for the Target Rock temperature regulator valves, Dresser pressure switches, Burndy tenninations, and the Johnson Control level transmitter. We understand this equipment is currently being qualified for WNP 1 and 4.

As you know, the normal channel of communications between the Office of Inspection and Enforcement and WPPSS is through the Region V Office. This will continue to be the appropriate channel for formal correspondence relating to this inspection of WPPSS' equipment qualification activities. This inspection and review will be conducted and directed by personnel from our Headquarters' staff with assistance provided from NRR, other Regional Offices and, in some instances, by personnel from the Sandia National Laboratories 810416ONTh
