Dear Mr. Chainnant 4
We are presently in the midst of our hearings to determine the future electricity generating requirements for North Carolina. From the evidence in these hearings, it is obvious that Duke Power Company will have limited reserves f 3r the summer of 1981, even after taking into account the generatins capacity of the McGuire Nuclear Unit #1.
Without McGuire #1, Duke's reserves are inadaquate to meet the reserve levels required by this Commission. The absence of McGuire #1 from Duke's capacity during the coming peak season will not only increase the likelihood of operating difficulties but will certainly result in increased operating costs to meet the load.
We understand that the hearings for the operating license for McGuire #1 have now been completed.
We, therefore, urge the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to expeditiously complete its deliberations and to issue the operating license for that unit as soon as possible in order to make that unit available for the summer of 1981.
! /.g Sincerely, vs Y. yl.
