4 i BEST ESTIMATE POST TEST PREDICTION FOR LOFT NUCLEAR EXPERIMENT L3-6 l a 1.0 Introduction This document contains the Yankee *J.Jmic Electric Company post test prediction of the coupled system thermal-hydraulic response for the Loss of Fluid Test (LOFT) System during Loss of Coolant Experiment (LOCE) L3-6. RELAP5/ Modi (Ref.1) computer code was used to calculate the thermal-hydraulic behavior of the LOFT system during LOCE L3-5. The analytical models used to perform this pradiction should be recognized as "best estimate" predictive mechanisms. b

2.0 Model Description for RELAP5/Modl This section describes the post test calculations of the LOCE L3-6 test using the code RELAPS/Modl. Updates used to modify RELAP5/Modl will be described first. Then the RELAPS input for L3-6 will be described. Two update changes to the code were used. One change was used to represent an effective pump moment of inertia which included pump motor and generator losses as a function of pump speed. A second change replaced a the product of internal energy and density in the energy equation with internal energy. This change is intended to reduce mass error in RELAP5 calculations. RELAPS input used to model L3-6 will be described in tems of nodaliza-tion and modeling features. The nodalization used for the LOCE L3-6 RELAP5 calculation is based on the standard EG&G nodalization presented in Ref. 2. The nodalization scheme is shown in Figure 1. A brief description of each component is given in Table 1. It should be noted that the LOFT volume distribution used in this calculation was derived indenendently of EG&G calculation. Modifications were made to the EG&G nodalization to represent the LOFT system configurations for LOCE L3-6 and to reflect experience gained in use of the code. Modifications were made in the nodalization of the intact loop, broken loop and pressurizer. The same number of nodes were used in the steam generator secondary and reactor vessel as were used in EG&G nodalization. The friction factors were changed from the base EG8G RELAP5 model, to better represent the pressure drop across the major components. Equal phase velocity was imposed at the break junction to prevent flow from becoming unchoked. Break flow periodically became unchoked during ~ preliminary calculations using the unequal velocity model. Subcooled and two phase discharge coefficients were both 0.65 for choked flow calculations at the break. No choking was allowed in the junction representing the bypass flow between the reactor vessel upper head and downcomer. The RELAP5 model uses a time dependent steam generator secondary uich is equivaient to modeling a leakage through the main steam control valve. { This is achieved by connecting volume 750-3 with a time dependent volume in l which the measured steam generator secondary steam done pressure is given. I A check valve connects the two volumes. Secondary pressure is kept from .i exceeding measured values by allowing leakage out of the steam generator secondary through a chack valve. Fluid temperature was incrased to facilitate secondary system pressur-ization in the short interval between auxiliary feed pump startup and secondary steam valve opening. For a short duration following auxiliary feed pump startup, injected fluid temperature was the temperature of feed-0 water (46b F). Then injected fluid temperature dropped to auxiliary feedwater 0 temperature (90F). For modeling two-phase degradation behavior, data that describe pump two-phase head and torque characteristics are needed. The new LOFT head and toque scultipliers based on experimental data, presented by EG&G in Ref. 3 have been used. Heat transfer from the primary and secondary systems to surroundings was ignored. In modeling the test, the actual initial conditions of the LOFT facility at the test initiation were input to RELAP5 model within the bounds of measure-ment error and heat balance consistency (Ref. 4). Table 2 provides a comparison between the initial test conditions used in the RELAP5 post test prediction and the initial conditions as measured just prior to the test. Listings of the RELAP5 updates and input are given in Appendix A. 3.0 Comparison of Experimental Results and RELAP5/ Modi Post Test Predictions I i LOFT L3-6 experimental results provided by EG&G (Ref. 5) and the post test predictions calculated by RELAP5/ Modi are compared in this section. Short-term (0 to 200 sec.) experimental results and RELAP5 predictions are i shown in Figures 2 to 17. Long tem (0 to 2400 sec.) experimental results e and RELAP5 predictions are shown in Figures 12 to 34. The selection of the parameters provided in this report was based on the availability and quality of the data, the correspondence between modeled volumes and physical locations of measurements, and the overall importance of the parameter in assessing the capability of the RELAP5 code. Table 3 presents measured versus predicted (RELAP5) sequence of events for experiment L3-6. 3.1 Pressure LOFT L3-6 pressure data and RELAP5 predictions are compared in short-tem (0 to 200 sec.) plots in Figures 2 to 7 and in long tem (0 to 2400 sec.) plots in Figures 18 to 23. Data and predictions are close in the short-tem plots shown in Figures 2 to 7. Differences between data and predictions are developing after 1000 sec. in the long tem plots shown in Figs.18 to 23. Primary system pressures are overpredicted after 1000 sec., as seen ia Figures l 18 to 22. Secondary system pressure is underpredicted after 1000 sec. sin Figure

23. During LOFT L3-6, secondary system pressure exceeded primary system pressure l

in the vicinity of 1000 seconds. Then the two systems appeared to be decoupled l in the time beyond 1000 seconds. Primary and secondary pressures change independently after 1000 seconds in the LOFT data. The primary and secondary l l i I systems remain caupled in the predictions. Primary and secondary pressures remain close in the time range from 1000 to 2400 seconds. Predicted j secondary system pressure remains lower than primary pressure up to 1810 seconds j as indicated in Table 3. Secedaiy system pressure exceeds primary pressure at 930.0 seconds in the LOFi L3-6 data. 3.2 Density Density data and predictions are compared in short term (0-200 seconds) plots in Figures 8 to 12 and in long term (0-2400 seconds) plots in Figures 24 to 28. Density predictions follow the data. Density predictions show large oscillations in the later portions of the time ran3e from 0 to 2400 seconds in Figures 24, 25 and 26. 3.3 Differential Pressure Differential pressure data and predictions are compared in short tere. (0-200 seconds) plots in Figures 13,14, and 15 and in long-term (0-2400 seconds) plots in Figures 29, 30 and 31. Predictions follow data fairly well. Predictions of differential pressure across reactor vessel show wider oscillations than data in Figure 31. 3.4 Fluid Temperature Fluid temperature' data and predictions are compared in short-term I (0 to 200 seconds) plots in Figures 16 and 17 and in long tenn (0 to 2400 seconds) plots in Figures 32 and 33. Fluid temperature in the intact loop hot. leg is predicted fairly well over the first hal'f of the time range from l 0 to 2400 seconds in Figure 32. Temperature is overpredicted in the second half of the time range. This os-rediction of temperature corresponds to over- . prediction of hot leg pressure shown in Figure 18. The steam generator inlet and outlet plena temperature data and predictions are compared in Figures.17 and 33. The difference between inlet and outlet temperature becomes almost zero in prediction while it becomes negative according to the data..-
