Dear Mr. Abel-

~

SUBJECT:

EXTENSION FOR COMPLETION OF FIRE PROTECTION MODIFICATIONS -

DRESDEN STATION, UNIT NO. 1 We have completed our review of your letter dated February 17, 1981, which requested an extension for completion of fire protection modifi-cations. A discussion of your request foliews.

You requested an extension of the completion schedule requirements of 10 CFR 50.4S(d) concerning fire protection modifications, which the NRC staff had previously approved for completion prior to startup of Dresden 1 following the current outage (scheduled for June 1986).

In support of your request you stated that:

1.

Dresden 1 will remain shutdown during the entire period.

2.

No fuel is in the reactor or the primary containment structure.

3.

All irradiated fuel is stored in the below-grade spent fuel pool and has not been irradiated in the reactor for at least twenty-seven (27) months.

Based on our review, we conclude that you have shown good cause for extending the completion date for these modifications, and that the public health and safety will not be adversely affected by such exten-sion. Accordingly, pursuant to 10 CFR 50.48(d), the dates for completion of the fire protection modifications at Dresden Unit No. I are hereby extended in accordance with 10 CFR 50.48(c)(1) and (2), to March 19, 1981, and December 17, 1981, and before startup from the current outage for items required under10 CFR 50.48(3) and (4),

i 810317 Y

Mr. J. S. Abel 2-March 6, 1981 4
