FEB 2 51981 EMORANDUM FOR:

D. G. Eisenhut, Director, Division of Licensing, NRR R. L. Tedesco, Assistant Director for D) nsing, DL THRU:

/

FROM:

F. J. Miraglia, Acting Chief, Licensing Branch No. 3, DL

SUBJECT:

EXTENSION OF CATAWBA 1 AND 2 CONSTRUCTION PERMITS (cps)

Catawba 1 and 2 cps are in effect until June 1,1981 and June 1,1982, respectively.

In accordance with 10 CFR 50.55(b), Duke Power Company plans to apply for CP extensions before May 1,1981 and would like to have the new dates in agreement with the estimates of fuel loading dates which will be provided by the NRC Caseload Forecast Panel for Catawba.

Therefore, Duke has requested that the panel visit the Catawba facility during the early part of April 1981.

K. Jabbour discussed this request with W. Lovelace, Licensee Operations Evaluation Branch, Office of Management and Program Analysis.

Bill indicated his availability during the early part of April 1981 and the availability of funds to cover his trip but he needs an indication from DL to schedule his trip. He also indicated that he would like to have the NRC Licensing Project Manager and the OIE Region II Resident Inspector attend the panel site visit. Moreover, Duke plans to submit Catawba's FSAR and ER in April 1981. The panel's estimates of fuel loading dates will be needed to establish review schedules. Therefore, we request your approval of.the Caseload Forecast Panel visit to Catawba so that the NRR review of the FSAR and ER can proceed in a timely manner.
