Mr. James G. Keppler, Director US Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region III 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, IL 60137 ULNRC-419
Dear Mr. Keppler:
INTERIM 10CFR50. 55 (e) /10CFR21 Report No. U-27 CALLAWAY PLANT C'JTT On January 30, 1981, Mr. H. Wescott of Region III was given verbal notification of a significant deficiency regarding loose bushings in Bergen-Paterson sway struts.
Of the eleven (11) loose bushings found, there was a potential for five (5) of these bushings to become completely disengaged from the sway strut paddle end.
A similar problem involving Corner & Lada Co. has already been reported under 10CFR50.55(e) criteria because of the potential to overstress a piping system if the bushings were to beccme ecmpletely disengaged during a seismic event.
We are ad-vised thar recent inspections at the Wolf Creek site have identified similar difficulties with some of the Bergen-Paterson furnished sway struts at that site.
These inspecticn findings were also reported to the NRC as a potential significant deficiency dnder 10CFR50.55(e) criteria by Kansas Gas & Electric.
Further investigations are being undertaken in conjunction with Kansas Gas and Electric to determine the cause of this diffi-culty and to develop a meaningful plan of corrective action.
Ap-plicabiliry to sway struts furnished to Callaway Site by ITT-Grinnell is also being considered.
Inasmuch as these problems are common to both SNUPPS Sites, a generic report involving the Bergen-Paterson units will be' submitted by SNUPPS on behalf of both Kansas Gas &
Electric Company and Union Electric Company.
We anticipate a final report being issued to the NRC on or before June 1, 1981.
ferf)trulyyours,
(
