Subject:

R.P.S. Protective Circuit Seismic Retrofit Package

Dear Mr. Ippolito:

Your letter dated September 24, 1980 stated deficiencies in our present regulator system for RPS and requested modifications. You also stated that installation of a conceptual design proposed by General Electric was an acceptable solution to the concern. We were requested to submit to you within 60 days of receipt of your letter (1) our com=itment to install a Class IE System, (2) schedule for completion of the modifi-cation, and (3) schedule for submission of design information and pro-posed Technical Specification.

We informed you in our December 2,1980 letter that we would be in-stalling a Class IE System. We also indicated that we planned to com-plete the modification by the end of our Spring 1982 refueling outage.

We stated that we would submit design information to you prior to June 1, 1981. At that time, we also expected to submit proposed Technical Specifications by fraa 1, 1981.

The RPS modification will be in accordance with GE Document NED0-24317, RPS Protective Circuit Upgrade Description. Two Electrical Protection Assemblies (EPA) will be connected in series with each RPS's power source - both normal and alternate. Each assembly consists of trip components which disconnect the RPS bus whenever voltage or frequency exceeds its normal tolerance.

Protective circuits for undervoltage, overvoltage, and underfrequency will be seismically qualified. Each EPA will be environmentally qual-ified to the requirements of IEEE-323, 1974 and will meet the test-ability requirement for Class IE equipment.
