NRC-81-71 WISCONSIN PUBLIC SERVICE CORPORATION P.O. Box 1200, Green Bay, Wisconsin 54305 May 8, 1981 Mr. J. G. Keppler, Regional Director Office of Inspection & Enforce.nent Region III U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, IL 60137
Dear Sir:
Docket 50-305 Operating License DPR-43 Kewaunee Nuclear Power Plant IE Bulletin No. 81-02:
Failure of Gate Valves to Close Against Differential Pressure In accordance with the requirements of IE Bulletin No. 81-02, Failure of Gr.e Valves to Close Against Differential Pressure, an investigation was undertaken to determine whether this type of valve was in any safety related system or con:ponent in the Kewaunee Ph nt.
Results cf the investigation revealed that Westinghouse has supplied us with two (2) GM88FNH Gate Valves under purchase order WPS-05572.
j These valves are intended for use as containment isolation valves in the Deaerated Drain System. The Deaerated Drain System is a non-safety related system designed to handle liquid and gaseous wastes. It is currently being modified to route those wastes Mck to the containment post-accident, if necessary. This modificarian is not complete at chis time.
The maximum dif ferential pressure that the valves faust close against is 90 psi.
The valves will be maintained normally closed in the Deaerated Drains Tank Emergency Pumps discharge line, and, therefore, will not be required to close to accomplish a safety related function under any normal plant conditions. The only possible circumstances where the valves may be required to close against the maximum dif ferential pressure would be during pump testing when the valves l
are open.
