Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Serial No. 191 Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation PSEC/PEC Attention:

Mr. Robert A. Clark, Chief Docket No. 50-339 Operating Reactors Branch No. 3 License No. NPF-7 Division of Licensing U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C.

20555 Gentlemen:

REGULATORY GUIDE 1.97 - REVISION 2 NORTH ANNA POWER STATION UNIT 2 i

1 On August 21, 1980, Virginia Electric and Power Company was issued Facility Operating License NPF-7 with conditions attached. This letter is in response to item number 2.C.16 of these conditions.

Item number 2.C.16 states that Vepco shall provide a schedule for bringing North Anna Power Station Unit No. 2 in compliance with Regulatory Guide 1.97 -

Revision 2.

Vepco is presently planning a two-phase program to meet the requirements of Regulatory Guide 1.97 - Revision 2.

Phase 1 of this program involves comparison of existing instrumentation ranges, instrtamentation redundancy requirements, instrumentation power supplies, and seismic and environmental qualifications to the requirements of Regulatory Guide 1.97 - Revision 2.

It is anticipated that this review will be completed by mid-June,1981, with a letter to the NRC detailing the conclusions in July, 1981. This letter will document the instrumentation that satisfies the intent of Regulatory Guide 1.97 - Revision 2 requirements and identify the instru-mentation that will be modified or replaced.

Existing plant instrumentation that satisfies range, redundancy, and power supply requirements will not be upgraded to Regulatory Guide 1.97 - Revision 2 instrumentation qualifications unless identified in the Master List of our NUREG-0588 review.

Phase 2 of this program will consist of modifying or replacing instrumentation i

identified in Phase 1.

It is anticipated that thia program will be completed by June,1983 or the first refueling outage thereaf ter.

Some instrumentation identified in Regulatory Guide 1.97 - Revision 2 has been purchased to satisfy the requirements of NUREG-0737 and NUREG-0588.

Additional instrumentation which is purchased to meet range or redundancy requirements identified in Phase 1 will meet the requirements of Regulatory Guide 1.97 -

Revision 2.

Where properly qualified equipment is unavailable the best available equipment will be installed.
