Dear Mr. Groce:
We have reviewed the radiological aspects of your September 29, 1980 i
submittal on modified spent fuel pin storage with new 10.5" center racks to replace the 12" center racks and find that additional information is required to complete our review. The enclosure provides questions to which we require formal responses in order to complete our review.

I (1) With respect to removal and disposal of the presently installed con-taminated low density racks and installation of the new high density racks please provide the followina information:
(1) Describe the method that will be used to remove and dispose of the old racks (i.e. crating intact racks or cuttir.g and drumming them) and installing the new ones.
(2) Provide a table for each operation performed in (1) above giving the following information:
(a) the number of workers required l
for each phase of the operation including divers, if necessary; (b) the dose rates they will be working in; (c) the occupancy i
times for each dose rate; (d) the total man-rem to complete the i
operation.
Include any ope ation to be performed that would be used as a dose reduction step during the modification.
(2) Demonstrate that the method used for-removai and disposal of the old racks will provide as low as is retsonably achieveable exposures to personnel performing the operations.
If compaction-of-racks by cutting and drum-ming is the alternative selected as your disposal method, please provide i
the man-rems that may be incurred as compared to-shipping the racks--
intact and show that this alternative is cost effective with respect to ALARA exposure criteria, and adequacy of burial space.
