REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON REACTOR VESSEL SUPPORT DESIGN - MIDLAND, UNITS 1 AND 2 Your letter of July 24, 1980 forwarded a report entitled " Reactor Pressure

Vessel Support Modification for Midland Reactor Power Plant, Midland, Michigan, Preliminary Report No. 1".

This report describes proposed modification includ-ing the design allowable stresses for the reactor vessel anchor bolts and other design criteria and notes that final design loads and detailed analytical techniques will be submitted for our review in October 1980.

Our review of this preliminary report indicates the need for the following additional information:

1.

Describe the steel making practice used for the material of the three failed reactor vessel anchor bolts. State whether the material was aluminum or silicon killed and vanadium grain refined.

2.

Identify the material of construction, including fabrica-tion details, to be used for the modifications to the reactor vessel support design.

3.

Describe the preservice and inservice inspection program i

to be conducted for the reactor vessel support design, including anchor bolts, shear pins and proposed lateral support desfgn.

Identify all exemptions, if any, which will be needed for the support design.

Discuss any pro-visions included to maintain radiological c::posures during these inspections to as low as is reasonable achievable.
