Dear Mr. Keppler:

DOCKET NOS. 50-266 AND 50-301 RESPONSE TO IE BULLETIN 80-20 POINT BEACH NUCLEAR PLANT UNITS 1 AND 2 Your IE Bulletin 80-20, dated July 3).,

1980, requested certain information and action concerning Westinghouse type W2 spring-return-to-neutral control switches at our Point Beach Nuclear Plant.

We have completed the reviews and testing required by the bulletin.

The response items below are numbered to correspond with the numbered items in the bulletin.

1.

Review of the control switches at Point Beach has determined that Westinghouse type W2 control switches with spring-return-to-neutral position are used in several safety-related equipment control circuits, as follows:

UNIT 1 Residual Heat Removal Pump 1P10A, 1P10B Containment Spray Pump 1P14A, 1P14B Containment Cooler Fans lWlAl, lWlB1, lWlCl, lWlD1 Service Water Pump P32A, P32B, P32C Auxiliary Feedwater Pump P38A Safety Injection Pump 1P15A, 1P15B Component Cooling Pump 1 Pila, 1PilB Supply Breaker lA05-1A52-57, 1A06-1A52-63 Tie Breaker 1A05-1A06 (lA52-61).

Residual Heat Removal Pump 2P10A, 2P10B Containment Spray Pump 2P14A, 2P14B Auxiliary Feedwater Pump P38B Containment Cooling Fans 2WlA1, 2WlB1, 2WlC1, 2WlD1 Service Water Pump P32D, P32E, P32F Supply Breaker 2A05-2A52-76, 2A06-2A52-70 Tie Breaker 2A05-2A06 (2A52-72)

Safety Injection Pump 2P15A, 2P15B Component Cooling Pump 2P11A, 2PllB 2.

All but four indicating light circuits of the Westinghouse 3.

type W2 switches in safety-related applications in both units have been modified to indicate switch closure.

The four remaining switches are used to control the supply breakers to the A05 and A06 buses in each unit.

These switches will be modified during the next Unit 1 and Unit 2 refueling outages.

These switches have been placed on a monthly test schedule to verify continuity until such time the circuit modifications can be completed.

The initial tests, which were completed within ten days of the receipt of the bulletin, indicated no malfunctioning W2 switches in either unit.

It is estimated that 40 man-hours were expended in conducting the review and preparation of the report required by this bulletin.

An additional 50 man-hours were expended modifying the indicating light circuits.

We trust this information answers your concerns in this matter.

Very truly yours, M
