SER for Fermi 2; Metallurav The response to you on items in the pressure boundary for which the materials required characterization left a few items unsatisfied.

Among these were the Main Steam Isolation Valves, which had received numerous tempering heat treatments, and some sleeves that had been made in Germany, the Mill procedures being unknown at this time.

To correct these deficiencies, we have contacted Quaker Alloy Casting Company, the caster of our valve bodies.

While they doubt that they still have the test blocks from the heats from which our valve bodies were cast, they have similar material made to ASTM A216, WCB and they will send Detroit Edison such a block from which specimens may be made.

We intend, upon receipt of the test block, to analyze it and perform, in our laboratories, l

l heat treatments to reproduce the condition of the valve bodie s.

We will then run Charpy-V specimens at an appro-priate temperature and observe the microstructure produced.

These tests should characterize the condition and toughness of our main steam isolation valves.

The time to perform these tests is 15 days after we receive the test block.

We shall inform the NRC of our test results as they are obtained.
