. RELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF SAFEGUARDS EVENT PNS-II-81-03 This oreliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE national security or public interest significance.

The information oresented is as initially rcceived without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is knqwn staff as of this date.

O On March 12, at 3:11 p.m. the plant switchboard operator received a call c5 g

.ti-ficd person stating: "There is a bomb set in reactor #2 due to go off at 6: %

The caller spcke in a calm, distinct manner with a local accent. No further information rela-tive to the threat was provided.

Efforts to trace the call were unsuccessful.

The if censee initiated a search of Unit #2 Reactor and Turbine Buildings, informed State and local law authorities, and evacuated the threatened area.

Search of Unit #2 facilities produced negative results and the area was declared clear at 7:r.0 p.m.

Unit #2 is currently in cold shutdown for maintenance. Unit #1 is in operation.

There has been no media interest. A news release is not planned by the licensee or Region II, NRC. The FBI was notified by the licensee. The State of North Carolina has betn informed.

Tha IAT was notified.

No further action by Region II is planned.

Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the NRC Operations Center at 3:30 p.m. on March 12. This information is current as of 9:00 a.m. on March 13.
