December 11, 1980 CPY-1173-80 Mr. R. H. Engelken, Director US Nuclear Regulatory Cor.: mission, Region V 1990 North California Blvd.

Walnut Creek, CA 94596

Dear Sir:

SUBJECT:

Fire Suppression System Special Report This letter is to confirm and follow up an immediate report made by Mr. C. A. Olmstead, Manager of Technical Services, Trojan Nuclear Plant, to Mr. M. H. Malmros, US NRC Resident Inspector, at 12:10 pm, Wednesday, December 10, 1980. A break had occurred in the fire system yard loop header at 11:10 am, which resulted in part of the fire suppression system being inoperable.

The break was caused by construction personnel doing groundwork for the plant Technical Support Center. Both the motor and diesel driven fire pumps started automatically and operated satisfactorily. Fire system header pressure was maintained at 100 psig or greater during the period of time the break existed.

Operations personnel isolated the appropriate section of the header by closing valves PIV4, PIV5, and PIV12. The portions of the system affected by the isolation of this section were:

Unit main and auxiliary transformers, deluge #1, 2, 3, 4, 5, Emergency diesel generator room, sprinkler systems A and B, and Steam generator feed pump lube oil reservoirs, deluge #7 and 8.

A firewatch was i= mediately stationed in the emergency' diesel generator room.

Fire hoses were run from operable hose stations to the areas of the unit main 6 0 and auxiliary transformers and feed purp lube oil reservoirs.

The break was repaired, tested and returned to service by 4:00 pm the same da.
