Narrative

Report

'for LER 50-366/1980-145 During normal' power operation surveil'1ance was being performed on the standby service water pump as-part of the operability test on Emergency D/G 1B.

'D/G 1B had been previously taken out of service for preventative maintenance.

This test revealed that the pump flow a,nd dynamic head data would not meet-the associated criteria set forth in ASME code section II IWP-3100-2.

Upon-discovery

.o f this

event, the pump was declared inoperable and the redundant source of caoling water for D/G 1B (HNP-1 PSW System) was proven operabic per Tech Specs section 3.7.1.2.

Investigation revealed that the valves (F401A & F402A) that pJ crosstic the standby service water pump discharge and the-HNP-1 PSW supply-to-D/G 1B piping were discovered partially open.and subsequently closed by operations-personnel just

. prior to. the - performance of this test.

Since it could not be determined how long the crosstie valve had been in the par-tially. open position, it was decided to acquire new reference data by repeating the test with the valves in the. correct configuration (locked closed).

As the pump again failed to deliver the rated

flow, the pump was then pulled for inspection and/or corrective maintenance.

Initial inspection did not indicate wear o f the. degree that would cause' pump failure although some wear was evident on the inside. diameter of the pump bowl assembly.

It was concluded upon discussion with the pump vendor to " cleanup" the inside diameter-of the pump ' bowls and i n s t a,11 oversized impeller wear rings.

The new wear ring size was specified by the vendor in order to achieve the optimum running cicarance between the inside diameter of the ' bowl and the impeller wear rings (DCR 80-407).

~

Upon. completion. of the fix, the pump was retested satisfac-torily and returned to service.
