nLEN ELLYN,ILLINOls 60137 Docket No. 50-266 Docket No. 50-301 Wisconsin Electric Power Company ATTN:
Mr. Sol Burstein Executive Vice President Power Plants 231 West Michigan Milwaukee, WI 53201 l
Gentlemen:
l i
The NRC has reviewed existing sy tems for emergency communications and, as a result, certain modifications will be made to the equipment associated with the Emergency Notification System and the Health Physics Network.
l Following is a discussion of the changes which will be initiated.
The NRC intends to have lamps installed on emergency phones in all control l
rooms, technical support centers, as, emergency operations facilities.
These lights will indicate when the phone is ringing. This should be helpful in those areas where many phones are located.
The NRC will also install output jacks on one extension each of the i
i Emergency Notification System and the Health Physics Network. These l
jacks will provide the capability for adding one-way speakers to these
{
systems. Two-way (talk-listen) speaker systems will not be permitted i
because they would add additional and unnecessary parties to the conversation which could cause some confusion and possibly hinder the transmission of plant data.
The NRC will pa*, for the installation of these jacks. However, any plant desiring a on -way speaker must purchase the equipment. Please select one locatian for each of the systems, not to include the control rooms, and inform Mr. C. J. Paperiello of my staff, in writing, within 25 days after receipt of this letter.
