Dear Mr. Ahearne:
I am writing to request that the NRC conduct a study on the effects of an oil spill in the general vicinity of the Carolina Power and Light's (Brunswick) nuclear power plant.
The Brunswick Energy Corporation is currently planning to build a 150,000 barrel per day capacity oil refinery near the Carolina Power and Light nuclear plant.
There is a sig-nificant increase in tanker traffic expected in the area and I am concerned about what effect an oil spill would have both with respect to local residents' safety and in terms cf the operating ability of the plant.
It is my feeling that any oil spill scenerios which are developed should include data on the effects of an oil spill near the intake bays of the Carolina Power and Light (Brunswick) nuclear plant.
I look forward to hearing from you on this, and I hope that you will keep me informed about any efforts, past or present, the NRC has made with respect to my request.
