Dear Mr. Giambusso:

As you have indicated (I), pursuant to the Interim Policy Statement (2),

we are required to show that the Yankee Nuclear Power Station complies with the criteria and other requirements set forth in that statement by July 1, 1974. To this end, we submitted two reports (3) (4) in January and October of 1972, demonstrating full compliance. h'hile the reactor core did contain some stainless steel clad assemblies, it was conservatively assum-1 in the analyses that the' core consisted entirely of Zircaloy-clad assemblies.

In addition to the requirements set forth in the Interim Policy Statement, you have also requested "that relevant information and supporting analyses, based on the new ECCS regulation (5), be submitted to the AEC for review and REWLATORY DOCKETFILE' CO

Cycle XI of the Yankee Nuclear Power Station contains four stainless steel clad assemblies which are not in limiting power locations.

It is our intent to provide the Commission an ECCS evaluation for the Yankee Nuclear Power Station on or before January 1, 197S. Thisevaluagnwillbeperformedinlstrictaccordance with the new ECCS regulations Should you require additional informa-tion on this subject prior to our submittal, please feel free to contact us.

Very truly yours, YANKEE ATOMIC ELECTRIC COMPANY
