Dear Congressman Atkinson:

I am writing in response to your note of June 25, 1980, to Chairman Ahearne re-garding the letter of June 4,1980, from your constituent, Mr. Flick. Mr. Flick wrote that he had an idea that might solve the krypton gas problem at Three Mile Island.

The purging of thd krypton gas from the TMI-2 reactor building was authorized by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on June 12, 1980, comenced on June 28, 1980, and was essentially completed on July 11, 1980. This authorization was based on a detailed evaluation of various alternatives for dealing with the krypton. The NRC staff evaluation and recomendation was published in NUREG-0662

" Final Environ-mental Assessment for Decontamination of the Three Mile Island Unit 2 Reactor Building Atmosphere" (Volumes 1 and 2). A copy of this report is enclosed.
