Report Number: SD-369/30-13 Report Date: August 18, 1980 Facility: McGuire Nuclear Station Identification of Deficienev: Mechanical Shock Arrestor Damaged During Installation Description of Deficiency:

On July 23, 1980, Mr. J. R. Wells and Mr. W. O. Henry reported the follow:.ng deficiency, by celephone, to Mr. Milt Hunt of NRC, Region II, Alcanta.

Mechanical Shock Arrestor size PSA and PSA k were pcssibly damaged during installation. There are approximately 300 of this type and si:e on Unit 1.

There was no functional inspection af ter installation.

Analysis of Safety Implication:

If damaged during installation these shock arrestors could lock up and not perform under load.

Corrective Action:

All mechanical shock arrestors installed in Unit I have been functionally checked. Damaged arrestors have been replaced.

Inspection procedures have been revised to require a functional check of all future Unit 1 installations and all Unit 2 installations. This action was completed on August 15, 1980.

Craf t persons responsible for arrestor installations have been instructed concerning the proper installation methods to avoid damage.
