Mrs. Sylvia E. Houser RD #6, Rox 50 Hummelstown, Pennsylvania 17036
Dear Mrs. Houser:
Your letter to Mr. Collins of the NRC in Middletown was referred to me for response.
The fomer Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) had a Congressional mandate to de-velop and promote nuclear energy. When the AEC was abolished in 1974, the NRC was created by Congress for the sole purpose of regulating the commercial production of nuclear energy. The U.S. Department of Energy is now responsible for the Federal Government's nuclear research and development activities.
Public perceptions of NRC are associated with NRC as a source of information about TMI activities. Because of this association, NRC has made the follow-ing provisions for infoming the public in the event of some future nuclear emergency. We recognize the importance of making complete and accurate infor-mation available to the public. Consequently, we have made specific plans for providing information to the public for such potentially serious accidents as occurred at Three Mile Island. These plans include making the availability of public infomation part of NRC's and the utilities' emergency response plan-ning. Under this policy, the utilities must provide offsite locations for newscenters. We also plan to appoint a senior NRC official responsible for coordinating NRC information activities during an emergency.
By centralizing the gathering and dissemination of NRC's information, we will 7rovide the public with relevant and timely infomation.
I am pleased to provide you with this infomation.
Sincerely, U
Bernard J. Snyder, Program Director Three Mile Island Program Office Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation 8 008260 Q
