Docket No. 50-320 Mr. R. C. Arnold Senior Vice President Metropolitan Edison Company 100 Interpace Parkway Parsippany, New Jersey 07054

Dear Mr. Arnold:

Subject:

Proposed Modification to the THI-2 Onsite Power System

Reference:

Letter from R. F. Wilson to J. T. Collins, Concerning BOP Diesel Generators; dated March 4, 1980; ID# TLL-078 In your letter, referenced above, you requested NRC's approval for the removal of the BOP Diesel Generator at TMI-2. We have reviewed your proposal and have concluded that the concept of removing the 80P diesel generators and substituting combustion turbines located nearby as a backup source of power for busses 2-3 and 2-4 is acceptable. This is in accordance with the previously approved and existing use of these same combustion turbines to provide a backup source of power for busses 2-5 and 2-6 for the circulation water pump.

We concur with the concept of removing the BOP diesel generators, however, we are unable to complete our safety evaluation because you did not provide sufficient detailed information concerning the design. We therefore require the following additional information; 1) proposed revisions to the technical specifications; 2) proposed revisions to the operating procedures; 3) include the. standby pressure control (SPC) system in the i

Table 1 list; 4) detailed electrical drawings including one-line diagrams, circuit breaker interlocking schemes, a.9d protective relaying.
