December 10, 2019 Mr. Richard W. Boyle Radioactive Materials Branch U.S. Department of Transportation 400 Seventh Street, S.W.
Washington, DC 20590
SUBJECT:
CERTIFICATE OF APPROVAL NO. F/410/B(U)-96 FOR THE F-522 PACKAGE
- ACKNOWLEDGEMENT LETTER
Dear Mr. Boyle:
By letter dated November 6, 2019, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) requested that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff perform a review of the Canadian Certificate of Competent Authority CDN/2094/B(U)F-96, Rev. No. 2, for the Model No. F-522 transport package and make a recommendation concerning the revalidation of the package for import and export use. The NRC staff performed an acceptance review of your application to determine whether the application contains sufficient technical information in scope and depth to allow the NRC staff to complete a detailed technical review per the International Atomic Energy Agency Specific Safety Requirements No. 6, Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material, 2012 Edition.
This letter informs you that the application appears to contain the necessary information to begin our technical review. We have established a schedule for the technical review of your amendment request. The schedule allows for the staff to issue a possible request for additional information by mid-January 2020, and a recommendation on revalidation and safety evaluation report by mid-March 2020, based on DOT responding to a request for additional information within a week after the date of the NRC request for additional information. If no additional information is needed, the recommendation for revalidation and associated safety evaluation report will be issued the end of January 2020. The staff estimates that completing the safety review of this application will require approximately 100 staff hours.
Please reference Docket No. 71-3091 and Enterprise Project Identifier No. L-2019-LLA-0247 in any future correspondence related to these actions. If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact me at (301) 415-6577.
Sincerely,
/RA/
