AB S TRAC'"
Construction of the Bailly nuclear power plant by the Northern Indiana Public Service Company requires with-drawing water frc= the sa=e water supply that feeds the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and the Cowles Bog.
Ter=ination of present alkaline seepage into the aquifer fro = ash-ponds will further aggravate the proble=.
Al-though extensive studies have been co=cleted to model the effects, certain situations have not been analyzed.
i The effect of termination of seepage has not been studied.
Nor has the newly discovered need to draw water from the lower aquifer or the ef fect of a " window" in the Cowles Bog.
The injectier. of new water to cure withdrawal =ay cure quantity proble=s but could cause problems with
- he " quality" of the water.
The Federation recot:= ends that pu= ping be halted until studies are completed, that the U.S. Geological Survey continue its studies and insure they are co=prehensive, that a cc=petent team be asse= bled to study the effects of different quality of water being injected and that the National Park Service exert a strengthened role in pro-tecting the Lakeshore.
