FIRST IlfrERIM REPORT.

Descr otion of Deficiency Geared limit switch ousings in Electrodyne valve motor-operators have been damaged from heat due to the placement of the resistive-type heater in the limit switch compartment. The purpose of the heaters is to prevent moisture from condensing in the compartment. The geared 111mit switch housings that are damaged from heat separate the limit switch compartment from the gear train.

The gears of some motor operators showed evide'nce of excess beat, but none were found to be inoperable. The affected valves, are located in the Component Cooling Water (CCS) and Essential Raw Coollng Water (ERCW) Systems. There are 40 Electrodyne motor operators in the _ unit 2 portion of the systems and 17 in the' portion of the systems common to units 1 and 2.

Interi= Progress TVA's Division of Nuclear Power (NUC PR) personnel at the Sequoyah Nuclear Plant sits-havs been removing the heaters from the limit switch compartments of the motor operators and have been inspecting the limit switch assemblies for. damage. The manufacturer of the Electrodyne motor-operators, Foxboro-Jordan of Milwaukee,. Wisconsin, has been notified 'of the problem and has supplied TVA with additional geared limit switch -

assemblies. Limit switch assemblies found to be damaged are being replaced. ^ The NUC PR personnel have removed the heaters and inspected the limit switch ' assemblies on all of the motor operators.

All but two of the limit switch asse'mblies found to be damaged have been replaced. The two that are lef.t will be replaced before unit 2 fuel loading.

The motor-opera', ors in question were supplied under a general piping contract with NAVCO. TVA has asked Westinghouse to determine if any Electrodyne motor-operators have been supplied on the NSSS contract.

Westinghouse has verbally confirmed that none have been supplied.

TVA's Division of Engineering Design (EN DES) is evaluating the need for the heaters and has not yet decided whether to leave out the heaters altogether or replace them with smaller heaters.
