DUKE POWER COMPANY MCGUIRE NUCLEAR STATION UNITS 1 & 2

' Report Number:

SD-369-370/80-02 Report Date: March 17, 1981 Facility: McGuire Nuclear Station - Units 1 and 2

. Description of Deficiency:

During review of environmental qualification documentation for safety-related i

electrical equipment, it was determined that the steam generator narrow-range level transmitter cables did not meet the environmental qualification require-ments. These cables had been certified for 30 days of post-accident condi-t

-tions instead of the required 120_ days. Sixteen cables in Unit No. I contain-ment are' involved. The cables for Unit No. 2 have not been installed.

- Analysis of Safety Imolication:

~

The cable. cercification does not provide adequate assurance that the cables would function properly for the required 120 days in a post-accident environ-ment.

Corrective Action:

The cable in Unit'No. 1-for steam generator level transmitters was replaced

- in August 1980 with new cable having sufficient qualification documentation.

The new cable with a; unique cable identification will also be installed in Unit No. 2 during the normal construction process.

Since the new cable conductor insulation diameter is smaller than the grommet openings in ;the electrical penetration connectors, pigtails of qualified single conductors'with a larger diameter are used to make the' transition between the

{

new cable and the electric penetration connectors. The conductors are spliced j

in the electric penetration-junction boxes using Raychem WCSF-N splices-following 1

.the guidelines:of an existing field installation specification.
