SUBJECT:
OFFSITE ARRESTS OF TRESPASSERS u
rw At approximately 4:00 p.m., March 19, 1981, the Citrus County Sheriffs Department arrested 13 individuals in the marshland vicinity of the Crystal River nuclear site. The arrests tere for trespassing on private property, which was approximately two miles from the licen-sGe site. The individuals wore military camouflage uniforms and were armed with automatic teapons. The individuals declined to identify themselves except for one individual who volunteered to be a " civilian advisor". The owner of the property had discovered the group on his property the day before and had been told they were the "197th from Benning".
This is unconfirmed.
Local media interest has occurred. A press release is not planned by the NRC, the licen-see is not planning a news release.
The FBI is investigating. The IAT was notified on March 19. The State of Florida has been notified.
There has been no indication that this group poses a threat to the Crystal River site as the arrests were conducted the day after the discovery of trespassing, were not resisted, and were several miles from licensee property.
Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the licensee at 6:00 p.m. on March 19.
This information is current as of 9:00 a.m. on March 20.
