'CYH-2480 Mr. L,oes P. O'Reilly, Director Region 1, Directorate of Regulatory Operations U. S. Atomic Energy Corr. mission 631 Park Avenue King of Prussia, Pennsylvania 19406

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

In accordance with the reporting requirements of Connecticut Yankee Technical Specification, Section 5.7.2.A, the following preliminary Abnormal Occurrence report involving an unsatisfactory test of tiners associated with the emergency diesel generator / core cooling systems is hereby submitted as Abnormal Occorrence No. 73-9.

During a routine test of Emergency Dies'el Generator 2A, the timers that actuate a service water pump and a containment air recirculation fan failed to operate as required. Relays associated with the timer circuitry had recently undergone routine inspection, cleaning and checking.

One relay cover was tightened to the extent that the relay contacts could not function properly.

The cover was loosened and then adjusted to normal pressure The timers were subsequently retested satisfactorily.

This preliminary report will be'followed by a ten day written report.

Very truly yours,

./
