NAME OF PREPARER W. R. CARTWRIGHT PHONE

Virginia Electric and Power Company North Anna Power Station, Unit 1 Attachment: Page 1 of 1 Docket No. 50-338 Report No. LER 81-008/03L-0

Description of Event

On January 17, 1981, with the unit in Mode 6, "A" steam generator protection II narrow range level transmitter LT-1475 was found to be out of tolerance low by as much as 108 mvde during periodic surveillance of the channel. This event is contrary to T.S. 3.3.2.1 and reportable pursuant to T.S. 6.9.1.9. a.

Probable Consequences of Occurrence The out of calibration condition would have resulted in a high-high steam generator level turbine trip and feedwater isolation signal at a level 2.7% higher than normal setpoint. The low and low-low level reactor trip functions were not adversely affected because they would have occurred earlier and thus be more conservative. High-high level turbine trip and feedwater isolation emanates from 2 of 3 steam generator narrow range level channels. Because redundant narrow range level protection channel III remained operable and channel I was either operable or in the tripped condition (See LERs 80-97 and 80-100/03L-0), the public health and safety were not affected.

Cause of Event

The cause of the channel being out of calibration was voltage drift in level transmitter LT-1475

Immediate Corrective Action

The level channel was recalibrated, satisfactorily checked, and returned to service.

Scheduled Corrective Action No scheduled corrective action is required.

Actions Taken to Prevent Reccurrence No further actions are required.

Generic Implications There are no generic implications associated with this event.
