20555 Virginia Electric and Power Company North Anna Power Station, U.e.its 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-338 OL and 50-339 OL Turbine Missiles Gentlemen:

I am afraid I still cannot give you Westinghouse's final word on the recommended inspection interval for the North Anna 1 turbine.

Westinghou.se, which has been reviewing the NRC Staff's recommendation, agrees with the Staff that inspection

-at the next refueling outage would be acceptable.

But it will take several acre weeks, until April 17, 1981, for Westinghouse to finish computing the reconcnended inspection intervals based on the current crack grcwth model.

I understand that Westing-house is now engaget in a dialogue with the Staff in order to be sure that everyone is using the same assumptions and guide-lines.

Rosenthal, Esquire Dr. John H.

Buck Dr. Lawrence R. Quarles March 31, 1981 Pace Two In the meantime, all I can tell you for certain is that both vapco and Westinghouse agree with the Staff that it would be safe to inspect the turbine at the next refueling outage.

-Since that outage is scheduled fo mid-1982, however, it ap-pears that several additional n..chs of operation before in-spection could also be justified.

I will plan to write you no later than April 21, 1981, and either give you Westinghouse's recommended inspection interval or tell you if there has been further delay.

Yours very truly, f,

James N.
