Docket No. 50-348 Mr. F. L. Clayton, Jr.
Senior Vice. President Alabama Power Company P. O. Box 2641 Birmingham, Alabama 35291
Dear Mr. Clayton:
' On December'8,1980, the NRC Project Manager received information relative to the tests being conducted on Farley Unit No. I turbina discs. The turbine had operated through two core cycles (about 17,000 hours0 days
0 hours
0 weeks
0 months
) since plant licensing in June 1977. Later, on December 12, 1980, Mr. William Ware of Alabama Power Company and Mr. Jerry Schmerling of Westinghouse', advised our staff that ultrasonic tests of the low-pressure (LP) turbine discs indicated numerous cracks in the bore and keyway sections of the rotors. We were advised that the information was preliminary and that final results would be forthcoming.
We are concerned that such LP turbine disc cracks might result in the rupture s
of one or more turbine discs.
Consequently, please provide a description of the inspections accomplished, including the size, aspect ratio and location of all cracks identified. Also provide us with your proposed modifications x
to the' cracked discs or the type and source of replacement discs. This
\\
information should be provided prior to restart of Farley Unit No.1.
Allow
\\
about 30 days before restart for our review.
We shall be happy to discuss this matter witti you and to explain our methods for analyzing the safety significance of bore and keyway cracks.
