Oscs Brown IS Tu.E MCCUIRE N1? CLEAR PLANT SAYE?
Carolina Action ne McCuire Nuclear Station, located just 17 miles north of Charlotte, Brenda Best on I.ake Norman, is scheduled to go into operation any time now.
Could it withstand an accident lika the one that happened at nree Mile Island?
' hrolina Fmironmentai According to a nuclear Regulatory Commission study dated June 26, 1980, Study Group SECY 80-107:
Jesse Risev H@nry Pressier (Chairman) 1.
McGuire's contairnment is built to withstand 15 pounds of pressure per square inch.
I)avidson Energy Group 2.
Ihe containment at nree Mile Island was built to withstand 65 Dawn Wilson pounds of pressure per square inch.
3.
At the height of the Three Mile Island accident, the pressure ague of h. omen \\.oters within the centsizment reached 28 pounds per square inch, due to June Kimmet the rapid hydrogen buildup and combustion.
Safe EnerCv Alliance The result was a frightening situation totally unplanned for by the g
g engineers present. At one point, the reactor was just minutes from a meltdown.
Sierra Club nerefore, it is clear that in a nree Mile Island-type accident at Margaret Miller McGuire, if there were an equal buildup of hydrogen pressure within the containment, the contalement would yisid, releasing deadly, radios-tive gases into the air we breathe.
Are we willing to take the risk of a nuclear catastrephe, centaminating our air, water and food because of a weak containnent? What are the unknown hazards of radiation? Vould a major accident cause cancer epidemics 15 to 20 years later? Would any amount of radiation released into the staosphere be too much?
There is something we can do.
Vrite a letter to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, urgicg them to reopen the McCuire licensing hearings. Express your concern over the operation of McGuire and the specific problem of low containment. De h*RC may be persuaded to reopen the hearings, and public opinion will be a crucial f actor in such a decision.
In your letter, refer to the study dated June 26, 1980. SECY 80-107,
" Proposed Interia Hydrogen Control Requirements for Small containment."
This will insure that the proper authorities get your letter. Simply address your letter to:
