NRC ESTABLISHES ADVISORY PANEL ON THREE MILE ISLAND CLEANUP The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has established a 12-member advisory panel of State and local officials, scien-tists, and citizens from the area to consult with the Com-mission and provide advice on major activities required in the cleanup of the Three Mile Island Unit 2 Nuclear Power Plant in Pennsylvania.
The advisory panel, to be headed by John E. Minnich, Chairman of the Dauphin County Commissioners, will hold its first meeting with the Commission in the near future.
In announcing the panel, NRC Chairman John F.
Ahearne said:
" Earlier this year the NRC's Special Task Force on the Three Mile Island cleanup recommended that the Commission develop a formal means to obtain input and views from the residents of the Three Mile Island area on the cleanup plans.
Subsequently, as part of the NRC's pending fiscal 1981 Authorization Legislation, provision was made for the establishment of a Three Mile Island Advisory Panel.
I l
advised the Congress in May that, in advance of passage of the legislation, the Commission planned to appoint such a panel.
We believe this group can provide the Commission l
with valuable counsel on the actions to be proposed and taken by the NRC regarding cleanup of Three Mile Island Unit 2.
We are pleased that these 12 persons have agreed to assist in this important effort."
