C?AC"ING IN CHARGING PUMP CASING CLADDING Cescrintien of Circunstances:

In January 1980 Corronwealth Edison Comoany (CECO) reported to the flRC that a radiographic examination had revealed crack indications in the cladding on the suction end clate of the 1A charging pump at Zion Unit 1.

This cen-trifugal charcina cumn 1A is one of two ourns installed in Zion Unit 1 for i

high head safety iniection of borated water to the reactor locos.

These pumps l

are additionally utilized as cnarcina cunos durino normal ooeration.

ASME i

Section XI inservice insoection rules referenced in the plant technical i

specification recuires pumo examination only once durinq the 10 year service interval and this ouma nad oeen in service acout 7 years.

l 1

The pumps are 2-1/2 inch, 11 stage, Type IJ manufactured by the Pacific Pumps Division of Dresser Industries.

The pumo casing end assemoly in the area of l

interest, Fiqure 1, consists of a sucticn end plate of A515 grade 60 carbon l

steel plate weided to the casing oarrei forging of A266 clcss 1 carbon steel "f

using an Inconel weicment.

The entire inner surface is clad with type 308

,{

stainless steel applied by sutmergea arc welding.

i r

An in-situ ul trasonic exaniinacion conaucted in late April confirmed clad cracking indications at une urrei casa cc end plate inner radius for approximately 330 l

degrees aroun; the circumference and that the cracking possibly extended into the pump base material in the Lotten 100 degrees of the assembly. A review of l

the original radicJraphs revealed crack like indications in the clad overlay, however, not to the extant observed during this examination.

M Subsecuently, the entire suction end of the pumo was removed and cross sections metallographically examined to further evaluate the nature and extent of the cracking.

!t was deternined that initiation and propagation of the clad cracks i

probably resulted frca stress concentration ano dilution effects in the initial corner bead pass due to the difficult access and bead sequencing required by the fairly shrrp corner geometry.

Extension of the cracks at the base metal-clad interface ranned to a depth of 1/1T inch maximum in the 1-1/2 inch thick base raterial.

Those crack tip areas wtre well blunted and slightly cavitated from corrosion effects due lengthy exposu. a to the localized boric acid attack.

Examination of the crack morphology revealed ti at the clad cracking essentially tho base retal-clad interface and that base metal corrosion progres-t i
