PHIPPS BEND MJCLEAR PLANT UNIT 1 - REPORTABLE DEFICIENCY - EMBEDDED PLATES WITHOUT HEAT TRACEABILITY (NCR PIMP 156)
Initial notification of the subject deficiency was made to NBC-OIE Region II, Inspector R. W. Wright on October 14, 1980. In empliance with paragradt 50.55(e) of 10 CFR Part 50, we are enclosing the first interim report on the subject deficiency. On October 14,1980, 'IVA informed NBC-OIE Region II, Inspector R. W. Wright of a condition involving the difficulty in tracing heat numbers on embedded plates in the auxiliary building of the Phipps Bend Nuclear Plant unit 1.
m is is the first interim report on the subject reportable deficiency. '1VA anticipates transmitting the final report on or before January 12, 1981.
Descriotion of Deficiency Enbedded plates used to connect and strengthen supports for systems in the auxiliary building are stamped with heat numbers which are not currently on Phipps bend's list of acceptable material heat numbers. Bis anmaly was detected during a routine inspection. Because the heat numbers of the subject plates are not on Ibipps Bend's heat lists, the cmpositien of these plates is not now known. We composition of ~ these plates must be determined in order to establish the adequacy of the plates in fulfilling their intended purpose. -
Interim Progress At present, TVA is in the process of determining how many plates afe without heat traceability. Plates representative of those with nontraceable heat numbers will be chipped out of the auxiliary building walls. Wese " samples" will be sent to Singleton Laboratories and their emposition determined.
