  • Dear Mr. Schwencers In the. Matter of- -) Docket No. 50-327 Tennessee Valley Authority .)

A series of tests were conducted by the Fenwal Corporation for TVA and Westinghouse to determine the capability of the glow plug ignitor to burn various mixtures of hydrogen, sir, and steam. The glow plug ignitor tested was identical to the ignitors installed at Sequoyah Nuclear Plant as part of the _ interim distributed ignition system. These tests constitute Phase I of the glow plug ignitor performance tests. The Fenwal test report is enclosed for your review.

Phase II testing is underway and will investigate the performance of the ignitors in various environments including continuous steam / hydrogen injeo-tion and simulated containment spray. The effects of hydrogen burning on a selected set of equipment will also be observed. The results of the Phase II tests will be transmitted to the NRC upon ocapletion of the testing.

TVA will provide a complete evaluation of the effectiveness of _the glow plug ignitors in burning hydrogen and protecting the containment during m tai, degraded oore events by December 1, 1980. The results of the Fenwal tests and she ignitor endurance testa performed at TVA's Singleton Laboratory w'll be used in that evaluation.

Very truly yours, TEloiESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITY A YU L. M. Mills, Manager Nuclose Regulation and Safety
