Dear Mr. Keppler:

Diesel Generator Model DSRV16 This letter will serve as the interim report as required by 10CFR50.55(e) on the potential significant deficiencies concerning DeLaval Standby Diesel Generators. Model DSRV16. The defect in manufacturing is limited to the Models DSRV12. DSRV16 and DSRV20 built before February 1980. DeLaval notified the NRC of this reportable deficiencies per 10CFR, Part 21 on September 19, 1980. These items were discussed during a telephone conversation between Murray Edelman of The Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company and Mr. Jim Konklin of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Region III, Of fice of Inspection and Enforcement on October 8,1980.

Description of Deficiency The Model DSRV16 Standby Diesel Generators were manuf actured by Transamerica DeLaval. Incorporated. DeLaval is supplying four (4) diesel generator units that will be used as standby power source for the Perry Nuclear Power Plant (PNPP). The reportable condition was identified in a letter from DeLaval to The Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company dated September 22, 1980. The potential defect concerns a dowel counterbore in the link rod manuf actured by Transamerica DeLaval that may be too shallow. A defective link rod could lead to

- link rod bolt failure if uncorrected and could result in engine /f non-availability ,

b Currently, the diesei generators are placed in their respective generator bays. Inspection of the diesel generators will take place jh during the Pre-Engine Start Test which is tentatively scheduled for October 1981. At that time. DeLaval will determine whether or not Perry Nuclear Power Plant has this significant deficiency. Any link )

l rod which has the counterbore too shallow will be replaced. DeLaval l

$r. Jemen G. K:pp10r November 3, 1980 proposes that for any link rod that is replaced, the bolts will also be replaced. A final report will be written to inform you of the results of the inspection by December 1,1981.

Very truly yours, ,
