Mr. John T. Collins, Deputy Director U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission c/o Three Mile Island Nuclear Station Middletown, Pennsylvania 17057

Dear Sir:

Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 2 (TMI-2)

Operating License No. DPR-73 Docket No. 50-320 RCS Water Chemistry and Corrosion Control Letter TLL 318, dated July 11, 1980, responded to two (2) specific concerns identified by the NRC in your letter, NRC/TMI-80-94, dated May 27, 1980, concerning the control of dissolved oxygen in the Reactor Coolant System water. As a result of this response, we committed to take two actions. The first action was to perform an analysis to verify the recombination of H /0,,2 in a gamma flux field. The results of this analysis were forwarded to you in our letter, TLL 406, dated August 20, 1980. The second action was to supply the NRC with the ri.sults of the testing program performed on the on-line oxygen measurement device, the Orbisphere, that was installed.

The on-line testing program for the Orbisphere consisted of caking a dissclved oxygen sample, as part of the weekly primary sample, in accordance with a procedure that was approved by the NRC.

After some initial flushing problems the dissolved oxygen values stabilized and were reoroducible from week to week.

This start-up test program resulted in an average value of 45 ppb 30 ppb after resolving the initial flushing problems, the error band being based on the accuracy of the meter. This comparts favorably with the results of the analysis for expected levels of oxygen assuming a minimum of 5 cc/kg, dissolved hydrogen residual.

Sincerely,

/

L K.Hovhy
